On 30th January 2010 eleven students embarked on a stimulating day trip to Enseleni Nature Reserve. The Imvubu ( Hippo ) hiking trail passed through various forms of habitat, including grasslands and riverine forest.
Despite inclement weather conditions upon arrival, the skies cleared up quickly and provided the ideal opportunity to look at the following trees:
Sycamore fig, Dracaena, Lala palm, Powder – Puff tree, Acacia karoo, Wild plum, Quinine tree, Wild Date palm and Sickle – bush.
In addition to the prolific forms of flora that were looked at, students observed the following:
Freshwater mussel shells opened by a water mongoose or otter, fungi, golden orb spider, kite spider, nyala, zebra and bush pig spoor.
The tour highlighted the importance of trees in the production of oxygen for human survival. Students were also made aware of the damage caused by water hyacinth in the Enseleni River system.
Thank you to Mr. Cook for sharing his insights and knowledge about the area.
Next Enviro – Club Outing: Saturday 13th February – Hluhluwe / Umfolozi Game Reserve.
